When can I transplant blackberry?

Hello there,

 

My thornless blackberry canes have put down roots where they have come into contact with the ground. We are going to be moving and I would like to take some of them with me but as they have not yet put out new canes from the rooted area I hesitate to dig them and pot them up for the move. Will they survive if I dig the new rooted sections at this stage, sever them from the mother cane, and plant them in a pot until I can transplant into the new yard? I have done this is the Spring after they show new growth but never at this time of year.

This time of the year is fine. Put them in a pot and cut them off the main bush. No problem. And don't be afraid of the winter, they are fully hard. Just put the pot out of very freezing winds if it is freezing during the day. ( the stem will tose to much of moist and dry out )
